Going on holiday to Ibiza, we didn't want to miss the superb **island of Formentera**! The photos of heavenly beaches and their turquoise waters, along with the island's bohemian spirit, had won us over. So we spent a whole day there admiring the beauty of the fourth Balearic island (_spoiler alert: one day is nowhere near enough to explore the island!_).

## Getting to Formentera from Ibiza

After a bit of research on the internet, we found the ferry company that offers the cheapest fares to go to Formentera. So we went for [AquaBus Ferry Boats](https://www.aquabusferryboats.com/fr): **19.99€** return on the same day! By booking in a travel agency, near Figueretes beach, we also added the **day bike package for 7€ more**. Several departure points are possible with this company: the port of Ibiza, Figueretes beach and En Bossa beach. Several times are offered from 9am in the morning, departing from Ibiza, and up to 9.30pm for the return. As for us, we left the port at **10am** and came back to Figueretes beach on the **7.15pm** boat. The crossing takes about **40 minutes**, enough time to admire the citadel of Eivissa and the coast of Ibiza.

> **Our tip**
>
> remember to bring bottles of water and sandwiches to picnic on the island (it will cost you less!). There is very little shade to shelter from the sun, which beats down very hard, even at the end of August.

## Getting around Formentera

As you dock in the port of La Savina, you may be surprised by the number of rental companies present on the quays. There's something for every taste: bike (electric or not), scooter, quad bike, car... As we had prepaid for the bikes in Ibiza, we went straight to the rental shop, [Migjorn](http://www.motorentmigjorn.com/fr). The rental company asked us for **10€** in cash as a **deposit** (_remember to bring change!_). However, our bikes were in a sorry state (broken pedal, hole in the basket, slipping chains...). Check them when you pick them up!

> **Our tip**
>
> to avoid wasting time on the spot, it's better to book your means of transport on the island in advance.

You will often have to ride alongside the cars on the road, but there are also greenways and cycle paths, which run through the Formentera countryside.

## What to see in Formentera

### Formentera salt flats nature reserve

Leaving the port of La Savina to go to Es Pujols, we took the road that runs through the **Ses Salines Natural Park of Formentera**. It is often forbidden to take the paths that cross the marshes, but on a bike it's easy to stop at the side of the road to admire the landscape. The colours change from pink to purplish, to deep turquoise blue. A treat for the eyes!
You will find more information [on the Formentera tourist office website](https://www.formentera.es/fr/lile/flore-et-faune/parc-naturel-de-ses-salines/).

### Platja Es Pujols

We chose to go first to **Es Pujols beach**. Coming from La Savina, take a small road on the left (carni de sa pedrera), where the luxurious Sa Pedrera hotel is. At the end of the dirt road, there is a small car park and the sublime Es Pujols beach. There weren't too many people when we went around midday. As a bonus, you can rent sun loungers and parasols at the bar on the beach.
The water is extremely clear, with shades of turquoise blue. It was the perfect chance to swim and cool off a bit!

Right next to this beach, going back towards the car park, a wooden walkway gives access to other **coves**, more typical, with fishing boats.

### Cala En Baster

The high point of the day was without a doubt the **Cala d'En Baster**! It's a magnificent cove with incredibly turquoise water. We went down the cliff to lay our towels in the shade of the rocks and swim in this blue hole. _Watch out though for the jellyfish that can be there, the water is so warm!_

### Platja de Les Illetes

This beach had been recommended to us by the travel agency where we had booked the ferry. We didn't have time to go all the way to the end of the peninsula but we stopped a little before to see the beach, before returning the bikes. The water there is clear but not as beautiful as in the coves. Part of the beach (the one close to La Savina) is very noisy with a lot of music. We don't recommend going there if you prefer a quiet spot.

## What we thought of Formentera

We absolutely wanted to see the island of Formentera during our stay in Ibiza and we weren't disappointed at all! We're even thinking of coming back one day, for several days, to enjoy all the island's heavenly beaches and coves.
**So we recommend spending a day in Formentera during your trip to Ibiza. The island is definitely worth it!**
