South America
We started our exploration of South America with Colombia, which we traveled through for two and a half months from January to March 2026, from the Caribbean coast to Andean villages. Our travel stories, itineraries and budgets are coming over the next few weeks.

Our trips in South America
In 2026, we discovered Colombia on a two-and-a-half-month tour of the country: an unforgettable trip during which we traveled through many Colombian regions, from the Caribbean coast to the Andean mountains, from the big cities to the lush green south of the country, from arid steppes to colorful villages.
We can’t wait to discover other South American countries like Brazil, Bolivia and Peru, which have caught our eye.

When to go to South America
The best time to go depends heavily on the countries and regions you’re traveling through, since the continent is huge and the seasons are reversed compared to Europe. Here we’ll only talk about the trip we actually experienced: we traveled through Colombia from January to March 2026, and that’s the period we recommend for this country.
These recommendations are based on our own travel experience, climate data for each country, and feedback from our friends and family and our Instagram community. Since climate change is increasingly affecting how regular seasons are, treat our tips as general trends to help you plan your trip.
When to go to Colombia
Colombia is a big country with varied geography, different landscapes and climates depending on the region, from the Caribbean and Pacific coasts to the Andean regions, the Amazon and the more desert-like areas.
Even though locals say there’s no real season in Colombia, here are our tips for choosing the best time depending on what kind of trip you’re planning.
- December to March: this is the period we chose for our trip, since it falls within one of the year’s dry seasons. We had great weather for two and a half months, with the usual bit of rain in the Andean region but mild temperatures, dry conditions in the other regions we traveled through, and warmth on the Caribbean coast. It’s also peak season in December and until the end of school holidays in early January, so if you want to avoid the crowds and high prices, book your trip from mid-January onward.
- June to August: the European summer months are also a good time to go, since they correspond to the year’s second dry season in Colombia. It’s a good option if you’re stuck taking time off during the summer school holidays.
