Last March, the question of our summer holidays came up. We wanted to go away for quite a long time, about two weeks, in Europe, in the sun (but not too hot!), for a road trip that would combine culture and nature. Slovenia turned out to be the perfect combination of all these criteria, and on top of that it is a destination still little known to French tourists.
So we booked our flights to Slovenia on Air France: we left from Paris Charles-de-Gaulle (from the small terminal 2G) with HOP!, one of the national airline’s subsidiaries. We paid 169€ per person (so a total of 338€ for two, on a direct flight), which is a very reasonable price especially for the month of August.
Once all the accommodation was booked, we looked for a rental car and went for Sixt. The price seemed very fair to us: 188€ for 9 days of rental.
Here we give you all the details of our road trip in Slovenia, our itinerary, the overall budget, the accommodation and our favourite spots!

Our favourite places to eat in Slovenia
On the whole, we always ate very well during our trip to Slovenia, whether in town or out in the countryside. We stopped many times at “gostilna”, those inns that serve good local produce: perfect for discovering the country’s food at fair prices. We also relied on the “Gault & Millau” label, which is fairly present, even in the most remote corners.
- Landerik in Llubljana
- Pop’s place in Llubljana
- Cacao in Llubljana
- Piran Pirano PastIccerIa in Piran
- Pinija Restaurant & Beach Bar in Strunjan on the Slovenian coast
- Gostilna Skok in the Karst region
- Pizzeria Minutka in Postojna
- Gostilna Pri treh ribnikih in Maribor
- Muzikafe Bed & Breakfast in Ptuj
- Wine Bar & Restaurant Sova in Bled
- Pension Resje Restaurant near Lake Bohinj
- Milka Restaurant on the shore of Lake Jasna
- Hisa Polonka in Kobarid
What we thought of Slovenia
We will not keep the suspense going any longer… we quite simply loved our trip to Slovenia! There is nothing we did not like, everything was perfect: magnificent landscapes, charming towns, mild weather, few tourists (except at a few sites), delicious food… We did not regret for a single second having chosen this country for our August holidays, even if there must be even fewer people out of season. The only thing we would have changed about this trip: adding more days to our itinerary to take more time and rest more.
So, if you were looking for a destination idea in Europe, not far from Paris, with breathtaking landscapes and cultural sites, do not hesitate to visit Slovenia!
