Predjama Castle, a cave-dwelling curiosity

After spending a good part of the day in the Škocjan caves, we headed for Predjama Castle (about thirty minutes by car from the caves).

After spending a good part of the day in the Škocjan caves, we headed for Predjama Castle (about thirty minutes by car from the caves). This cave castle is presented as one of the must-sees of a trip to Slovenia and we didn’t want to miss it because of its curious construction!

A few practical details

Predjama Castle is part of the Postojnska Jama Park along with the famous Postojna caves. You can combine the two visits (38.50€ for adults all the same): a free shuttle is available between the two tourist sites (20 minute journey). All the information on the park’s website here.

We chose to visit only Predjama Castle and so paid 11.90€ for entry as students (make sure you have your student card, they absolutely ask for it…). The castle is open from 9am to 7pm in July and August. At the castle entrance, an audio guide (in French!) is provided with about thirty numbers to follow inside the building.

Outside

Seen from afar, Predjama Castle is really very photogenic! Set into the rock, it seems to emerge from a cave with its striped shutters which give it a certain charm.

Inside

Visiting the inside of the castle takes between an hour and an hour and a half, the time it takes to listen to all the audio. Several rooms are still furnished, which lets you get an idea of life back then.

Green valley and small village edged with forest under the blue sky
White facade with striped shutters behind red geraniums
Old kitchen with cauldrons hanging above the hearth
Wooden vaulted hall filled with armour and banquet tables
Inner cave lit by a lantern above a wooden walkway
High wall pierced with small windows above the red geraniums

What we thought of Predjama Castle

We found the site quite impressive and the visit interesting thanks to the audio guides. So we don’t regret stopping there at all!
We recommend visiting the castle in the morning or at the end of the day rather than in between to avoid the crowds. We were there around 4.30pm and the visitors were already starting to leave. A lovely surprise all in all!
