10-day road trip in Lanzarote

When autumn comes, we start asking ourselves the question: “where are we going this winter?”. And for this year 2020, we fancied a road trip in the sun, a bit of warmth but above all nature and a change of scene.

When autumn comes, we start asking ourselves the question: “where are we going this winter? ”. And for this year 2020, we fancied a road trip in the sun, a bit of warmth but above all nature and a change of scene. So we looked into the Canary Islands and went for the island that seemed to us accessible, wilder and richer than its neighbours: Lanzarote. On 22 September 2019, we therefore booked our plane tickets on Easyjet for 10 days from 2 to 11 January 2020.

Once the tickets were booked and the accommodation reserved, we looked for a hire car (essential on the island). Having been very satisfied last summer in Slovenia with the company Sixt, we decided to try the experience again. We decided to hire a fairly comfortable car (Mini Cooper category) and so got a lovely blue Audi A3! Everything went very well: when you arrive at the airport, you get a text from Sixt telling you the way to the car park where a Sixt shuttle (free of course) comes to pick you up. The Sixt agency is in the retail area of Arrecife, five minutes by shuttle from the airport. We recommend it!

Our accommodation in Lanzarote

As usual, we booked our accommodation on Airbnb. We had several precise criteria in mind (pool or jacuzzi, panoramic view, quiet…) and found exactly what we needed for this holiday in the sun. So we booked an entire place with a private jacuzzi and a pool (to share with the owners), with a splendid view over the sea, and above all, totally cut off from civilisation! Perfect for switching off and resting. This little nest is ideally located in the Geria valley for criss-crossing the whole island, without too much driving during the day. We can only recommend this place!

What we thought of Lanzarote

It is common to hear around us: “Ah, the Canaries… rocks in the middle of the Ocean! It is just for tourists! You will see “. We left with no preconceptions about Lanzarote and came back delighted with our trip! We really loved these ten days spent on the island, the landscapes are so exotic and so varied. It is a piece of Spain off the coast of Africa that we liked a lot, because we felt good there, calm and rested, without ever having time to get bored. Some people visit Lanzarote in a few days but, for us, ten days or so was ideal to discover the island in depth while taking our time.
We wanted a holiday in the sun, far from the crowds, to get a change of scene and discover extraordinary landscapes: mission accomplished! We can only recommend that you look into this little Canary island which deserves more than a detour, in low season especially.
